at Thriving Proof

Why is a CIMT test important?

Cardiovascular disease stands as the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States, responsible for 33% of all fatalities and surpassing the death toll from all cancer types combined.

The American Heart Association highlights a concerning statistic: 50% of men and 64% of women who die suddenly from coronary vascular disease exhibit no prior symptoms. Moreover, up to 50% of individuals who succumb to heart attacks or strokes possess "normal" lipid profiles according to standard health evaluations. These facts underscore the necessity of the CIMT test as a critical tool for early detection and intervention in cardiovascular health.

Benefits of an IMT exam at ThrivingProof

  • CIMT is a more effective diagnostic and disease monitoring tool.  Stop Heart Attacks and Strokes from occurring – In a 10-year, 100,000 person-year study (CAFES-CAVE), IMT caught 98.6%of the heart attacks and strokes BEFORE they happened.

  • In a landmark epidemiologic study (ARIC), elevated IMT was 9 times more predictive of increased hazard ratio (future risk of heart attacks and strokes) than was an LDL cholesterol > 160 mg/DL. CIMT is a better test!

  •  This is a non-invasive test. No needle sticks or disrobing are required. There is no radiation from the exam. There is no pain associated with this test – it’s just sound waves.

  •  Find out if you are at Intermediate or High risk in time to treat the disease medically instead of waiting until it needs to be treated surgically.

  • Track Treatment Efficacy. Is your medication working? Have the lifestyle changes you have implemented been effective at minimizing your disease? The test is accurate to 0.002mm which is significantly smaller than the size of a hair on your head. This means it can be used to track your disease and pre-disease in annual year over year exams.

  • Trained and certified technicians, specializing in CIMT, come to our office at regular intervals to scan patients. Patients recline on an exam table where a small amount of water-soluble ultrasound gel is placed on both sides of your neck (it will be removed at the end of your exam). This helps to conduct the sound waves. The technician will then take a series of images of the arteries on the right and left side of your neck.

  • The exam takes less than 15 minutes of patient time to complete!
